Pressurized Gas tanks

I bought a pair of tall boy 1949 Johnson gas tanks that are pressurized. When I prime them to get fuel to my outboard, fuel comes out of the primer knob all over my hand. I took one apart and discovered the rubbers are cracked but still work, I decided to put an o-ring in the priming shaft and it slowed the fuel from coming out, but it still gets all over my hands. How can I correct this? Can I get new rubber kits to replace the cracked rubbers? Did they make an Evinrude version of these tall boy Johnson tanks?

Re: Pressurized Gas tanks

Might check on this site for the parts otherwise vintage outboard has the parts to rebuild the tank. The other thing to check is
put sealer on the rubber diaphragm in the pump where the plunger goes through it, that is probably where the gas is coming from.

Are these the 2 tanks from the Whitby meet? If so, I wanted them so I refuse to help :)

Kidding of course. As stated, a rebuild with new diaphragms and sealer will solve the issue.

I got these tanks from Port Colborne
What kind of sealer would you suggest?

I bought 2 tanks and they are apparently 1949. My Evinrude is 1954, did they still use these tanks then?

The earlier tanks will work with your '54, but they are not "correct", per se. The '54 came with the lower profile style tank, rounded top edges, with the metal primer button, and removeable hose "wings".
