Pressurized fuel tank?

Hi all,
First time here. I just bought a used 1976 Evinrude 40 (..or so says the cowling!) but the engine says 40el76r, serial#j452198. On the engine block there is a round aluminum plate that says #j4521988(note the additional 8).
I am new to boating and I have a couple of questions:
1- Is this motor an Evinrude or a Johnson? Which is the correct serial number? And what does the "r" stand for?
2- Do I need a pressurized fuel tank or no?
I do appreciate ay help while I am waiting for a manual I ordered.
Thnx

Re: Pressurized fuel tank?

It is a Johnson. The E in the model number denotes Electric Start as opposed to R for Rope Start. The trailing letter is for a factory run or change during the model year. http://web.archive.org/web/20011110000235/www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/jomodyr/JHP40.html

BTW, welcome, even though it is not my forum but iboats'.

The Serial numbers for Johnson motors in 1976 are in the four million range so the number on the welch plug on the engine is the correct one.

You don't need a pressure tank. You will want to check into a factory service manual for the motor. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1976...015QQitemZ250012102505QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

Re: Pressurized fuel tank?

Thankyou so much Rear Admiral for your welcome and valubale info. The factory service manual is on its way. The only thing I did so far is spray the carburator with carb cleaner and measured the compression: One cylinder is 125 and the second is 120 which I was told is good. I am keeping my fingers crossed:) and will wait for the manual before I do anything else!
