I have heard on the internet people are saying that the chemicals in the new Pressure Treated wood these days reacts with the aluminum maybe messing it up possibly. I have a 16ft Tracker I have a front and back deck already cut with fresh PT wood. I went to home depot today and picked up 2 gallons of bears water proofing for decks, will this help for the pressure treated wood so my boat does not get messed up. Any help is appreciated thanks. I just need to find out from everybody if I should just use this PT on aluminum or not.

remove the wood its going to corrode the aluminum and ruin your boat.

The product you purchased won't help at all.

The PT wood and aluminum can't come in contact with each other or its possible to have severe corrosion of the aluminum.

If PT wood is used with aluminum you need to separate them, some pontoon boats use PT, but they use rubber or other products between them to eliminate contact.

It would be much easier to buy new plywood.

do not do this w/out some validity from others, but just thinking.couldnt you just resin the edges of the plywood to seal them where they come in contact w/the aluminum? It would still allow the wood to "breathe" to dry, which is very important.Others, please chime in.Is this not correct thinking on my part?

At work we have foam tape we put on top of all the crossmembers to seperate the aluminum from the wood, that should be all you need.

I have the same wood in my boat without tape and haven't seen any type of corrosion or reaction btu mine is actual marine ply not Home Depot PT.

I have Pressure treated as a floor in my 16' aluminacraft for the last 10 years.Lowes Top-choice. Not one single bit of corrosion evident. I did put a waterproofing on them after they dried out. (olympic deck stain ). So far ,nop problems. The added weight of the PTL makes the boat so much easier to manuver also.

Yes 10 years ago ......... PT wood was treated with arsenic called CCA chromated copper arsenate and the "new" process is called ACQ which is made with alkaline copper quaternary which is primarily copper. The copper is the reactive agent.

Modern ACQ is NOT compatible with aluminum , steel or even old galvanized fastener's.

The boat I am working on now has suffered from a POs PT transom. The 12 FTer I did just before also suffered from a POs PT transom.

It is your boat, but I would not do it. I would not even trust it sealed.

That said, some folks claim to get away with it and it is not going to sink you in a hurry. However, at some point in the future, your ears will begin to burn as you get a right good cussing from a new owner. :)

My short reply is I'm not sure, but.... When I built my house, the industry had just changed to the non arsenic based PT wood - it was extremely corrosive. You had to use stainless fasteners, and guard it against coming in contact with any metal flashing. That was 2005. Last year, I built a deck, and was told that there was a new formulation and it was no longer corrosive. It did not require special fasteners or barriers against metal. When looking at the new stuff, it looks more yellow or bright green rather than the darker green CCA or ACQ wood. Might want to look into the specific kind you bought.

Again, I'm more knowledgeable in building than boating, so take it for what it's worth.
