Re: President Bush Blamed for Mine Disaster
FTR, I am not looking to pin blame on anyone specifically, let alone GWB. And the very fact they were having Fed inspections with apparently a long list of violations is probably a positive sign on the part of the administration.

I am, however, a strong proponent of workplace safety, and a strong proponent of workplace rules, conditions, etc. You can get that way if you ever have to help remove a man who had his foot twisted around a 3 foot diameter sprocket who was standing on a chain in a sawmill and didn't observe proper lockout proceedures...It leaves a strong and lasting impression.

And investigating the accident is crucial in determining what changes in policy or proceedures, or enforcement may be necessary.

This is serious business, and I do hope there is not some political cronie involved, be it on part of the government or the company involved. I would assume that was not the case, but a decent investigation will reveal the facts.

BTW, We had in our mill office a framed copy of a newspaper article detailing a negligent homicide charge against two supervisors in a local Ontario steel mill who repeatedly allowed employees to ignore safety rules and regulations.
