Preparing Cylinder Head for Reassembly

'94 Yamaha 90TLRS: Putting on a new head gasket. Lots of old gasket material stuck on head and cylinder mating surfaces. Someone told me to use 80 grit sandpaper to clean the block side(cylinder mating surfaces and related areas). Is this true? It sounds a bit coarse. Any suggestions other than using a razor blade? Also, I'm concerned about sand from the sandpaper getting into the cylinders. Thanks.

Permatex makes a spray on gasket remover that works great! It is #80646. This along with a hard nylon scraper should do it for you.
