I have a 1988 Yamaha 115 HP precision blend outboard. The remote oil tank (under center console ) is not filling the oil tank on the outboard. I put 12 volts directly to the pump on the remote oil tank. It would not run. Am I right to assume the pump is bad? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Did you apply 12 volts AND A GROUND? A bad ground connection will stop the pump.

Haven’t checked the float yet. I did disconnect the pump from the remote tank and hooked it straight to the battery and it did not run. The battery was fully charged. I hooked it to both the positive and negative terminals of the battery straight to the pump. To me this is saying pump is shot. Agree?

No need to check the float. The float has nothing whatsoever to do with the pump failing to operate.

You could just as well been informed to test the trim and tilt relay.

Check the float in the other tank. Unless you are sure you have put 12v to the pump in the right place and earthed. Also with ignition on too, just in case.

He said he jumped directly from the battery, + and -. No need for turning on the key or checking another float.

I have replaced 3 Oil Lift Pump motors, on my 1997 130 Yamaha. The Magnets, become unglued from the Motor Casing. I did once epoxy the magnets back on, only to have the pump run in reverse. I just swapped the inlet/outlet hoses and used it that way.
