If anyone can help with a basic "pre-start" checklist, as a guideline before starting a outboard that hasn't been run in a while, that would be great.

Thanks for your time and help.

Or if anyone can point me to some threads with some info that would be swell.

Change the lower unit oil, check the plugs, and fire it up. :)

Thanks for the quick reply, I know this is a stupid question, but could you recommend some lower unit oil, '62 merc 500 KH. Still waiting on manual via online delivery. Thanks again, Zmoz - Fellow Oregonian.

That doesnt help me at all, sorry. There is one topic that talks alot about TC-W3 and how MANY different kinds and variations, Synthetic or Synthetic mix, or not. For a beginner like me, waiting for my manaul, That doesn't help much, but thanks.

-Looking for someone with an old Merc perhaps, that has had some good experience with a certain kind.

I use mercs high performance quicksilver lower unit gear lube, i've found it to be as good as any other lower unit gear lube.
TC-W3 rated outboard motor oil is what is mixed with the gas in two stroke outboard engines, any brand should do just fine, though some may smoke more than others, it is said that synthetics do smoke a lot less and is much better in the long run for your engine.

I directed you to the FAQ section because it has an excellent "prestart" checklist with a good process of elimination should you incur problems starting your motor.
Good luck :)

I would also go ahead and change the impeller if the engine has sat idle for any extended amount of time or if you are unsure of when it was last changed. The rubber vanes can and will deteriorate from lack of use translating into major problems and $$$ down the road.

Synthetic LU lube like Amsoil is a very good choice. Around here it cost about the same too...a 10oz tube of no name lube cost $2, while a whole quart of Amsoil is about $9.
