Pre Alpha No Trim Up

Hey everyone, I have a pre alpha with no trim up. The switch is only a two way up, and down. The down works fine, when I hit the up nothing. I have voltage coming from switch. Strange part is I ran a jumper from just behind switch to connector to rule out any broken wiring. When the bare wire touches the metal housing of the shifter the up works. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!

Bad negative (or ground). First check the switch to see if it is ok with a volt ohm meter. I suspect it is fine. The check the negative wire with the volt ohm meter for continuity. I suspect it will have inifinite resistance. There could be a bad connector or a break in the wire inside the insulation. You may have to replace this wire.

Pre-Alpha doesn't mean much. Perhaps a year, model number, or serial number would help.

Here is from another thread.

What exactly are you calling a pre-Alpha? Pre means before, and there were a lot of drives that came out before the Alpha I drive in 1986.
Many of them aren't even interchangeable with the Alpha drive.
Drives like the O drive, the I, II, and III, the 1A, 1B, 1C series, the TR. an TRS and 215 drives are all "Pre" Alpha, but but not even close to interchangable.
Now, if you are talking about the MC-1 (known by many names), the R, and the MR are the drives that actually interchange with the Alpha I drive. When I say interchange, that means you can put a complete MC-1 drive in place of an Alpha, and vise versa, but you can not interchange parts between them, too many little differences.
Download this ID and History document I put together some time back, I think it will help you understand all the differences.

Sorry guys it's a 79 Grady with a quicksilver 3000 I believe. There are no ground wires coming out of the control. A hot, up, and down. Red, Blue, and green. Single solenoid pump
MC-1 drive, thanks for that chart Don!!

There is a short in the "red" wire at the box. POS that it is.
Unplug the harness at the pump (check the fuse in the J-clip while your there) & try it by energizing the solenoids. Will most likely work fine.

Might try pulling the handle off and looking at the wires. They sometimes chafe through the insulation and ground out on the housing.

Ok well I will disassemble tomorrow and let you know what happens. I have a quick off topic question I was browsing the manual for oil recommendation and all I saw was 30wt. Any suggestions on modern oil? 79, 470, 190hp

Yes, start a new thread on that subject in the Non Repair IO forum along with the other ka-zillion other "what oil" threads already there. Look at the locked replies on the very last page of that forum.

Just not here.
