I've had this problem a few times. First time turned out to just be the shift shaft and it was universal in all the pre and alpha ones but when I needed a specific part no one could help. I have a feeling I'm going to run in the same problem when I pick up my new, antique, Chieftain. Anyone with ideas on how to identity a model number without the sticker? The number stamped on the side is of no use neither is the number on the skeg or cav plate. The people on the merc phone number were of little help. The folks at Michigan Wheel were able to narrow one down to a few based on combinations of part numbers but there must be a better more accurate way.

First, there's no 'pre-Alpha'... Doesn't exist... Identifying which drive you have comes down to visual inspection. If you could post up some photos (if not directly to this site, then to a hosting site and a link to), that would help us. Identifying the engine itself can also help with the drive...
