I have a 1981 Pre alpha drive that I am replacing all the goodies at the back. I need to change the shift cable bellows, but I cannot get it off. Any ideas?

Re: Pre Alpha Bellows question

ya need to remove the shift cable itself to get the new bellows on. the shift cable itself threads onto the bellhousing either from ft or the back. the old style cable treads from the ft. so ya gotta remove the bellhousing to get to it then retap using a straight tap to thread the new style in from the back of the bellhousing. to get the bellow on, i just put them on first prior to feeding the cable back inside the boat..

there's a special mercruiser tool to unscrew the shift cable...http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_980...4158114--**********.483286259--view_id.203882
