Hello All,

I was moving my power trim motor around and had to losen the bolts and lost some fluid in the process. The mechanic that put this on told me how to add more oil, by losening one screw and then addin oil by losening another screw. All that to side he also told me that I should be using transmission fluid. The oil that leaked out seened to be transmission fluid it was redish.. However he will be on vacation for the rest of the month and I dnt have his cell #.

There is no other information on what type of motor this is except for the picture below:

I lost a little over 1/2oz of oil.

Thanks
Zipp

Well, 1/2 oz of oil is nothing to worry about. That PTT unit was originally filled with 5W-30 motor oil. If the oil is reddish like auto trans oil, then someone changed it. Just refill with some Dextron ATF.

CAN NO ONE READ? The info plate SPECIFICALLY states use straight 20 weight oil. Multi grade oils have additives harmful to the internal O rings in the pump. Transmission fluid should be OK but if it were my pump I would bleed the system and refill with the correct fluid.

Frank, your point is well taken. Of course I had the same PTT system for 20 years on my '77 Merc 1500, and my pump/reservoir called for 5W-30, which at the time was hard to find.

Multi grade oils do not use different additive packages that attack the hydraulics O rings. There is a difference between non detergent and detergent oil but advocating the use of transmission fluid which is just motor oil that has a had a huge amount of detergent added compared to standard oil is counter intuitive if this is the basis of the objection. Ive used full synthetic 0 weight motor oil in automatic transmissions ( shifts fast in race cars ) and transmission fluid in engines and 2 cycle motor oil in trim rams in a pinch with none of the above causing any issues.

I use dexron in my trim rams.

Thanks all. I am not sure if I should wait for the mechanic to come back from wacation in 2 weeks to ask what kind of transmission fluid he has used. He told me that in the 35+ years of being in this business he always used transmission fluid in these types of motors withiut any issues..
