PowerPoint Viewer! What gives?

I received a .pps file in an email. I clicked on it to open it and got a message that the file was not associated with any program, create an association in the Folder Options in the Control Panel.

I went to the 'file types' tab in the Folder Options and .pps extensions were already listed as PowerPoint files.

I verified that I did indeed have PPV. I then saved the email attached PPS file to my desktop and clicked on it to open. It opened straight away in PPV. What is going on that I cannot open it direct from the email. My other PC will do it. There is no 'open with' option when I right click on the file in the email attachment.

Your email software will not let you open it when it is still an attachment. There's a couple of reasons for this but it's mostly about security. If you save the file attachment locally you can then open it. This is a feature not a bug.

If you're using outlook you don't need a hack, you can set the option to allow it unless you're using a a company computer and it's been disabled at the group policy level.

I am using Outlook Express with XP on a home computer. Google as I might, I never found where you could do that. Can you point me to it? It does work now with the fix I ran but I would like to know how to set it without the fix, for the future.

I can't remember exactly where it is in XP/Outlook Express. In Windows 7/Outlook 2010 the GUI method is Options, Trust Center, Trust Center Settings, Attachment Handling. I think I still have a image file left over from some old builds. If I get some time next week I'll load it up and give you the registry settings so you can modify it to your hearts content.

Don't spend any time on it Jlawsen. It is working good now. When googling for a solution, I found that Vista required some registry tweaking but they had this little downloadable fix app for XP. Thanks anyway!
