You don't open them. But I was hard headed enough to try it once. Mine was potted with epoxy surrounding every part and impossible to do anything with . Your mileage may vary.

I opened one up once for the heck of it... It is filled with epoxy to dampen the vibrations so the interior components can't move around and get damaged. If you WERE able to get all that out you would probably damage everything in the process anyway. Less headache to just get a new one. How would you feel if you did all that work only to find out it still isn't any good?

Kind of like doing an emergency appendectomy....on yourself.
If there is no other possible option.....maybe.
Otherwise, don't even think about it.

Oh great...someone who will finally be able to rebuild a power pack for all of us. Sorry for the sarcasm but it's been tried over and over since the introduction of the power pack. Let us know how it works and then we'll all still buy new. There is a reason they still sell new OEM or aftermarket...it's because you can't repair them. At least, not reliably. If you figure it out you better patent it

How do you get the acetone to stop dissolving stuff when it gets through the epoxy...it also has a healthy appetite for most plastics? PC boards, components coatings etc. will all be "in harm's way".
But go ahead, fill your boots if you are set on it.... :)

All of us electronics technicians are very familiar with the "potted" module.
Often the module is potted so as to keep secrets about the design.
Of course it also protects the contents from corrosion from contact with water and air. This is probably the case here, as the CDI circuit is pretty simple electronically.
But one thing we never do is seriously try to repair any potted module.
Sometimes we saw them in half for a joke, but that's about all we can do.

Interesting!

What actually is that "nitro dissolvent"?

The PCB boards are usually also epoxy based. What happens to them?
The picture is too small to see details.
