i have a 1980 115 evinrude, with a bad hole, broke a couple of rings. good time to upgrade the powerhead. it's a v4, what are my options as for as hp is concerned to upgrade to, and what years must they be to sit in place of my bad powerplant. any help is appreciated. thanx in advance.

Re: powerhead upgrade

Any late model V4 crossflow will bolt on. The V4s with the "tuned" exhaust will breathe slightly better at high rpm. But - theres always a "but" -- if you broke the rings on the starboard side, youre probably lugging the motor now. Upgrading to a 140 style ph will probably do nothing.

If youre propped out in the low 5000 range you arent getting the most out of what you have now. Before you look for another block lets look at what you have. Tell us more about your rig and how its set up.

Good luck!

Re: powerhead upgrade

looking at rear of motor it is the port side top that broke a ring. the boat is a 16' ft performance bass boat 2 man. rated for 115. 1986 model. with approx 450lbs of men and gear will top out at about 47mph by dash speedometer at 5400 rpm. but anyhow going to a boat mech in next few minutes to have a complete overhaul done on this powerhead. but any advice would be appreciated for future use and knowledge. thanx again.
