Hello

I had 1 powerhead bolt snap on me, but have a small amount coming out of the hole so I wanted to have a buddy weld a nut on to back it out. I had it soaking it with PBlaster and CRC Freeze-out alternating days/nights for almost a week now.

My questions are..

1)What type of metal is the powerhead bolt made of?

2)What type of metal nut should I get for welding on there?

Thank you,
DamianJP

Re: Powerhead bolt material

You cant go wrong using stainless steel nut and stainless steel welding rod.
If you don't have stainless steel, 7018 up to 11018 will also work with a carbon steel nut.

I like to use super missile rod with stainless steel nut. But I am a weldor with access to those rods.

You can also use a wire feed welder and that works well too.

Try heating the stud up, then remove heat and spray with PB Blaster. A vice grip may turn the stud out. Most are steel bolts. Look at bolt heads of other bolts and see what the marking are. A lot of motors used grade 8 steel bolts

Hey Chris

I only have 2-3 (mabey 4) threads left and wanted tot ry the nnut trick 1st. If all else fails I can try with the vise grips. Didn't want to chew the threads up bad to were I cant put a nut on 1st.

I have a fastener place by me , they have everything it seems like bolts, screws ,riviets ect. Do I have to stick with getting this hardware from evinrude or can I try and match up some stuff from them?

What bolt in the power head are you talking about? Is it a head bolt? Water jacket bolt? Power head to mid section bolt? All these bolts are different grades.

It will cost you a fortune to buy bolts from Evinrude, I will wager. If you can take an undamaged bolt to the fastener place, i would do so. Make sure to match grade, length and thread courseness.

I once needed a 7/16" fine thread, grade 8 bolt, 6" long for my Merc suspension rubber mounts. Merc wanted $12 each, other internet places wanted $8 ea with shipping. The "Bolt Bin" near me had them for $1.50 each, with nuts, washers etc.
