Power trim won't lift engine up

I have a 96 Mercury 60 hp elpt with power hydraulic trim. When I push the trim up button, the pump sounds as if it is running, but nothing moves. I can lift the motor manually if I push the up button on the motor AND lift it with my arms (heavy!) I admittedly am no mechanic, but am willing to learn. Is this a simple matter of needing hydraulic fluid? I read on the motor that one should not open the reservoir unless the motor is fully up - this is difficult since it is so heavy I can only partially lift it. Even if I were able to lift it, I'm not sure I know how to check or replace the fluid. I have looked for an online owners manual, but cannot find one. I'd greatly appreciate any help: tia Dave

There should be A 1/4 inch screw with a gasket somewhere around the top of pump. It does not matter if it is up or down. Just add fluid run it up and down 2or3 times and recheck fluid level. Just fill to screw.

Check the manual release valve, it should be closed.

Chris..............
