my 1979 85 hp johnson trim pump housing is bad.

are they interchangable?

model of evinrude E140TRLCTE

Hmm, take a picture of both and see if they look the same. If they don't look alike, then probably not.

The units will fit but the t/t mtrs are different. The '79 used a solenoid and the '83 used relays . '79 mtr was 3 wire and the '83 was 2 wire.

Re: power trim unit swap

the trim unit was a direct bolt in, the 83 evinrude hasa 2 wire motor and the 79 has a 3 wire. the trim motors are also a direct swap so i used the 3 wire motor again instead of rewiring the trim circuit.

it was easier to swap the trim unit by removing engine from boat and while hanging on a chain remove the tilt tube, tilt piston pin and then the take complete unit to the bench and remove transom brackets.

the trim cap seals are very easy to replace if you can get the caps out of the housing using the special tool. my 1979 trim caps were frozen solid.

reinstall in reverse order with most bolts hand tight until its all assembled.

good luck.
