I have a Mercruiser 1979 140 HP, the unit has 2 trim solenoids, one of the solenoids has been replaced and there is a wiring problem I believe. The trim down function sometimes just clicks , and or operates very slowly to lower the outdrive. The up function works fine. I have a haynes manual , although the wiring diagram is very unclear/ small and hard to see which wires go where, also the down solenoid switch in the operating handle gets hot also when holding in the down trim, Art

Re: Power trim Problem

Had a similar problem and ended up with a trim motor rebuild. Quite surprising, as I thought the motor was all OK as it ran fine one way.<br /><br />A replacement motor was WAY too expensive and the old one was renovated by a skilled auto-electric workshop for a fraction of the cost.<br /><br />BTW the reason for it all was, that the rubber grommet in the housing leaked and (a little) water made it's way into the trim motor.

Re: Power trim Problem

If your electrics work - just not when the relay/solenoid is engaged by the switch - your setup is working fine except for the switch and/or the relay for that direction.<br /><br />So that sound's pretty much like not a new motor.

Re: Power trim Problem

Which of the two solenoids (up or down) was replaced? The "down" solenoid should have black wire leading to one of the small terminals (ground) and a green wire leading to the other small terminal (trigger). The "up" solenoid should also have a black wire connected to one of the small terminals (ground) and a blue wire connected to the other small terminal (trigger). <br /><br />Resistance causes heat...so I suspect there is a poor connection at the "down" switch at the shift selector/throttle control handle...or the switch itself is bad.<br /><br />Keep in mind the outdrive travels slower going down than it will going up. This is normal.<br /><br />Hope this helps get you started troubleshooting the problem.<br /><br />Walt

Re: Power trim Problem

Swap the solinoids and see if the problem changes. Dirty contacts inside the solinoids can cause problems.
