I have a Yamaha 70 ('90 or'91). A couple of years ago I hit something, maybe a floating tire. Ever since, the power trim makes a "click-clack" noise when in operation. It works, but makes the noise. It does not make the noise when the engine is off, at idle, or at a low-speed power setting, such as no-wake speed. It makes the noise only when there is a moderate to maximum load being exerted on the lower unit. There is no external evidence of damage.

Can it be low on oil? How do you fill it? What else can it be? It would be difficult to take it to a dealer, since the problem is exhibited only in the water while underway!

Re: Power Trim Noise

Are you sure it's the trim unit making this noise or the lower unit. When's the last time you checked the fluid in the t&t? If you hit something two years ago it could be the T&T or l/u has some internal damage you can't see. How did your l/u oil look last time you changed it?
If you don't have one get a manual for your motor so when you find what's wrong you can maybe fix it yourself. Sounds like somethings broke but you won't know what until you start checking it out.

Dutch

Dutch,
I guess by l/u you mean lower unit. I change it once a year. It looks fine. But what is T&T? Remember, the noise occurs only when operating the power trim while underway at moderate power levels or higher. I can't find any other oil levels to check!

SHRDLU,Thinking maybe you have air in system.Try operating trim and tilt fully up and down through several cycles and see if it allieviates condition. If not ,hydraulic cylinder internals could be dammaged from prior impact.Just a shot. Also conduct test out of water and exert some down force on unit with foot, while trimming up, to see if symptom can be reproduced.
