I have a 1977 175 johnson that won't stay up in full tilt. As soon as you let off the switch, it leaks down. Here's the deal, there is no sign of exterior oil leaking around the ram or motor. What's up with this.

Re: power trim leaks down

My guess is that an internal o-ring is leaking.

Is there a check valve somewhere?

Check the fluid level, top off if needed, cycle motor a few times, then re fill. First check the manual release valve, ill bet its loose.

oil level is full, manual release valve is tight, cycled several times and still leakes down. If the center ram has internal leak, Are the O rings common rubber rings, or would they have to be special material?

Re: power trim leaks down

ok, it's been awhile but here's an update on the leaking tilt/trim. I pulled the unit off this evening, which was quiet a chore, after removing all the flat screw valves, the two way valve under the motor was stuck. The unit had alot of trash inside. Cleaned throughout. replaced all o-rings as needed, flushed out trash in resevoir. Here's where the question starts. Upon removal, the power wires got jerked out of the motor, thus breaking the brush assembly. Now i have to replace the motor. The motor on my unit is a three wire. Black, blue, and green wires????!!!! Will and omc two wire motor that has the same mounting base work as a replacement. Correct me if i'm wrong, the only difference is that the three wire grounds through the black wire, and the two wire grounds through the housing which is grounded to the motor mount which is grounding to the battery. WILL THIS SWAP WORK? PLEASE HELP

Re: power trim leaks down

the 3 wire and two motors are electricly very different. the 2 wire does NOT ground through the case. the 2 wire switches direction by swapping positive and negative on the two leads. thus it needs the newer control box with the relays that does this swapping.

Re: power trim leaks down

I am assuming the shuttle valve was stuck or clogged. One other area to look at is the quad ring on the piston assembly but those rarely go bad and even if they do, the leakdown would be much slower.

You can still get the old 3 wire motors here. He is trustworthy, I have bought many off of him.

www.maxrules.com

There are also options available if you decide to go with a 3 wire motor. Let us know.
