Power trim -goes up fine; trim motor runs but doesn't go down

I apologize if this is redundant but I haven't seen my specific problem described so please advise.

My motor is down more often than up as boat on lift so the trim used mostly while running. I put the motor up for the first time in over a month. When I tried to lower it the trim motor runs but the engine stays up. I am only able to lower it by turning the manual release bolt.

Up but not down. Please help.

You've confirmed the fluid reservoir is full?

What kind of motor? What year?

Older Mercs sometimes have the manual tilt lock jam. I presume you do not have that?
