One of the metal braid hoses came loose on my port side trim cylinder. I lost all of the oil in the trim pump and cylinders. The hose DID NOT come completely off, just loose enough to loose its oil.

This drive is on a 2001 Mercruiser Alpha 1.

The shop said to put oil back in the unit as it is 'self purging'.

I asked if I should use a non-permanent lock-tite on the threads of the hose, but he said NO.

Anyone have any tips/tricks for this?
Are there any proceedures I should take to re-fill the system?

This is the first time this has happened, and I really don't fancy the idea of it happening in a bad place (like the middle of the ocean or on the highway)

Thanks,

H.

Hi Homerr,
Tighten the hose as tightly as your manuel suggests. Raise the trim assembly & motor to the maximun height (if it will raise at all) and top up with appropriate oil. Then raise and lower it a few times. After this leave it raised for an hour or two and inspect the oil resiviour, there may be milky oil or clean oil there. If clean oil then you're in luck and it'll just need topping up. If there's milky oil then you've had air infiltrate the system and this will need removal. Sometimes it's possible to leave the unit and the air will seperate in the oil resiviour permitting you to simply top it up and continue as normal.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
Ross

Thank you. I will dump some oil in and give it a go.

The dealer seemed to think that you can just fill it up and go. We'll see I guess.
I haven't had much luck with their service department, so I tend to try to do the work myself.

Thaks again!

Rob
