2002 Larson with Volvo 4.3, recently had fuel delivery problem fixed (relay). Power trim has 10 amp fuse keeps blowing, can it be the relays and do i need to replace both? The wiring is fine. Any suggestions?

Re: Power Trim blowing fuses

could be a faulty relay. something is drawing more than ten amps. are you sure its a 10 amp fuse for the trim? most trim fuses are 20 amp. the fuse is part of the trim control circuits.the trim power circuits are on a breaker. time to find the excessive current draw(shorts) on the control circuit.

That 10A fuse also operating 2 relays. I would check the relays and the pump motor. Disconnect the trim pump wires and use one side for + and the other side for - also switch them around + & - and see if it also works that way.
Combined with your faulty fuel pump relay, have you had any high voltage spikes or reversed battery terminal prolems prior to this happening?

Thanks Rodbolt and Don,
When my fuel pump relay was replaced the mechanic left my key on and drained the battery. I gave it a 10 amp charge for about three hours, could this have damaged the relays? Should I just replace both relays or can I check to see if one or both are shot? The trim motor is less than three years old, do they go out this quick?

I just had this same problem. Did you find a solution? I was going across the lake this weekend, went to adjust the trim and nothing happened. When I got back to the dock, I discovered that the 10amp fuse was blown. Successive fuses also blew after pressing the trim buttons. The wiring 'looks' fine, and I have ordered replacement relays, just in case that is it. Any additional help would be appreciated.

Yes, start a new thread. Reason is, most people read the initial post and reply to it. Never reading the many replies in between.
Therefore they will never see your question, especially since I have now replied and your question is buried.

Re: Power Trim blowing fuses

As someone pointed out above, the 10 amp fuse is just for the control side of it (the relays and the wiring), the pump is fed through a high current fuse or breaker. Relays do go bad, but very rarely do the coils short in them. The 10 amp fuse supplies power to one wire that runs up to your helm switch. The helm switch then sends power back on one of the other wires ( up OR down). If any of these wires short to ground the fuse will blow. If somewhere the up and down wires get shorted together (even in the switch itself) both relays will fire together and blow the fuse. Before replacing parts I would suggest that you dissconnect the positive control wire at both relays, then operate switch several times and see if fuse holds. If not, then one of those wires is shorted to ground. If thats ok, connect one relay at a time and make sure that only one relay fires when the switch is pushed in ONE direction. If either relay fires in both directions then the two return lines are shorted together somewhere. If this all checks out, then time to replace relays.
