"new" motor (to me ) johnson 50 hp, year 2000. Motor has power tilt, I'm used to manual tilt and have always left the motor unlocked so that if i strike something ( lots of reefs near me) the motor pops up. Makes a loud noise, but better than the sound of transom cracking...question is, what happens with power tilt when you strike something?
Thanks!

Most trim/tilt systems have what is called an impact relief mode. When you hit something an impact relief valve will open and allow the tilt cylinder rod to extend up. To lower the engine you use the normal trim/tilt switch. I'm paraphrasing from a service manual. If you want more details, get a Johnson service manual and check trim tielt section.
