late 70s johnson 140hp. 3 wire power trim was not working. replaced complete assembly with used hydraulic unit and NEW 2 wire motor.Do not have it wired in yet,but when connect the leads to a battery to test. The motor on the pump runs and engine with move down ok. When try to move engine up it is very slow and needs assistance.Battery is good. Also tried a different battery. When i connect a battery charger to the battery and put it on boost setting the trim works fine both ways? The trim motor sounds to run much faster with the increased amperage.

How do you know the battery is good? A battery can read 12 volts on a voltmeter and still have insufficient power under load--that's why the only way to test a battery's true condition is with a "load test". That's what you're doing when you run the trim pump, putting a significant load on the battery, at which point it shows that the battery is toast. I just had to replace my battery, even though it read 12 volts, because it would run the trim or start the engine. A new Die-Hard and the trim motor runs like a champ.
