I have a 1989 Checkmate Spectra 170 with a 1979 Mercury 115 HP (Power of Tower) motor w/tilt and trim (3 button on console). I am thinking of purchasing a 1978 Mercury 150 HP Black Max with nonworking tilt and trim. Will the tilt and trim setup I have with the 1979 motor work/interchange with the 1978 150 HP? I am just looking to change motors for more SPEED! Any comments on the 78 Mercury Black Max motors? Thank you.

I doubt it. It didnt sound feasible when the trim died on my 135hp '90 v6 so i went with a new system. Someone with more credibility would be best to speak to this.

As capslock said, the later model V6 motors won't interchange PTT units with your inline. However, I think you have a chance, since the motors are so close in age. Check the crowleymarine.com website parts list and see if the units look the same. If so, I think they will interchange. They should be external pump, 4 trim-hose PTT units.

Sorry they will not work as the V-6 is a 2 line pump and the Inline is a 4 line. The pump pressures are different as is the reverse lock systems. Make sure you get the control box for the 150 as the wiring is different from the inline. Also that 150 only really a 135 at prop... I myself would find a later model 150 lke a XR6

If the rams fit then it should work.

Almost any pump from any manufacturer to fit any engine of any horsepower from any year is designed to work in the 1800-2500psi range. Go to Napa and buy fittings plug up any unused ports. If you need extra ports then buy high quality brass tees.

That not really correct as pumps are designed for each motor/cylinder application. Yes they all run high pressures but the valve bodies/manifold are designed for that trim design. The V-6 rams have the impact valves in cylinders(2300psi) where as the inline impact valve is in manifold(1100psi) as they(inline) are just 2 basic cylinders, the inline has a manual release valve the V-6 doesnt,V-6 has reverse lock valve and inline dont. V-6 runs 300-700 more psi than inline, the shuttle valve check pops off at 50 psi in V-6pump and the 150psi in the inline. The single ram V-6 Oildyne pump runs in excess off 3300psi due to to large volume of cylinder.

Re: Power Tilt/Trim Interchangable?

okay, then just buy a new Volvo AQ290 pump ($180) or a used 1980's OMC Stringer pump ($100). Either pump will work with any dual action hydraulic cylinder including log splitters, house levelers, bucket trucks, snow plows, and marine trim. You can fabricate a mounting bracket out of sheet metal. Pipe them up using 3/16 CuNi brake tubing and brass tube nuts. It will turn greenish and look ugly in salt water but it is actually a less corrosive metal than stainless steel. It will easily take trim pressures with out swelling and can be bent into any shape by hand. It runs about $1 a foot and is sold at any auto brake shop that works on volvos and mercedes. If you need a section of flexible tubing then harbor freight sells 18" 3500PSI tubes for cheap with 1/8" MPT fittings.

So, at any rate, if the rams fit then you're in business.

I'd still try whatever pump you already have first. There isn't that much difference from one to another. All tires are round so that they can roll and all hydraulics pumps put out oil pressure. If the prop slams down when you give it throttle then you need a higher pressure pump. If the volvo slams down then your ram is probably broken. Hydraulic fitting have a maximum rated pressure. Nobody is going to risk a lawsuit by designing a system to operate above that mark.
