I am new to this forum so hopefully somebody can help. I have a 1988 Mercury xr2 150. The tilt works fine on the way up but sometimes when I try to tilt the motor down it only clicks. If i move the button several times it will start going down but i usually have to do it several times to get it done. I took the cowling off the motor today and found the little box where the clicking is coming from (sorry i'm new to boats and don't know anything about them). Anyway if i push on this box it seems to work everytime as long as i have my finger on that box. What is this box? What could be causing the tilt to not work? I read another post and it said something about oil may be low or the brushes may be worn. How and where do i check the oil level? And the same with the brushes? Thanks for all the help.

Re: Power Tilt and Trim

The little box is a selenoid switch. One controls the tilt up and the other one down. Your switch may need to be replaced
