Power Steering Pump Pulley - How to remove ?

Hi All,

I've got a brand new power steering pump for a Volvo Penta 5.0L (1995), but like an idiot, I dropped it and bent the pulley. So now I need to swap the pulley from the old one.

I'm aware that this normally takes a special puller, but they seem to be impossible to obtain in the UK.

I've tried to manufacture a similar puller to the one shown in Clymer, but it just won't budge.

Can anyone advise exactly how the pulley is secured keyway ? Interference fit ? tapered shaft ?

The pulley has to be pulled from the center. I suppose it's tapered. You can't pull it from the edges, you have to pull the collar in the center. Steering pulley pullers/installers are pretty common. Are you sure you were asking for the right thing? Sometimes they have their own names for common things in the UK...

Thanks bjcsc

I manufactured a pretty substantial puller from an old ball joint separator which uses the flange on the pulley boss to work against the shaft, but it just bent before budging the pulley.

I even tried heat on the boss to try to expand it, but no joy.

I just wanted to make sure there's no hidden attachment mechanism before I try really hard.

I'll have another go at my local tool store.

its just a press fit, no keys no taper, you reverse some of the tool components to reinstall. its the same pump set up almost all the north american fords, chyslers and GM's used for about 20 years.
try some of the shops that work on american built stuff.
I bought my puller kit at NAPA auto parts store for about 80 dollars.

Any volvo penta tool can be obtained via mail order from www.volspec.co.uk Give the parts deptment a call and explain \what you want they should be able to help. I sourced my VP tools from them using the part numbers in the Volvo Manual.

Chris / Rodbolt,

Thanks for the replies guys. Now I know two things I didn't know before thanks to iboats.

Still think it sounds crazy to hold a big pulley like that on with just a press fit, I guess that's US engineering for you, we (in the UK) would have at least a keyway, a bolt, some Loctite and probably a weld just for good measure ;)
