I have almost 1" of play in my steering system. It appears there is no way to remove the lash i will call it. I know the drive is crabbing either left or right at WOT....Is there any adjustment to take out the slack..it does not appear to be in the steering box but in the mount system on the transom wall...

Hold the steering arm inside the boat so it doesn't move and have someone else move just the free play without moving the steering arm. Shouldn't be any movement.
The rest of the movement is cable and helm.

Well hmm ok there is a sleeve.. large black.. power steering hoses connect to it..that moves !/2 " on the what appears to be the power ram casing...No slop in the cable even a 1/2"wheel turn...it move's the sleeve..it seems to be loose on the ram.

I was referring to holding the steering arm and moving the free play in the drive, I didn't really say that as I should have originally.

The tube that the steering cable attaches to, and goes through the power steering unit on the transom, is a shuttle valve and what operates the power steering. The cable must be free to move for the power steering to work properly.
This might help explain it a bit more.
