Power steering hoses... where do they go?

I have the selco manual as well as my four winns manual and can't figure this one out....

From the power steering pump, the high pressure hose goes to the steering cylinder. The return hose goes no where... the end opposite the cylinder is not attached to anything and I can't find a place where it would be attached.

I traced the low pressure hose from the steering pump to the oil cooler. I figured that the inlet on the oil cooler would be where my unattached hose would go but there is already a hose connected to the inlet - I can't see where it comes from but its way in the back, possibly connected to the out drive.

This has got to be an easy fix but I can't figure it out. When I start the engine ATF starts spraying everywhere out of the disconnected hose.

The diagram at the end of the link below may help.

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&group=669&GroupList=657,658,659,660,661,662,663,664,666,665,667,668,669,670,671,672,673,674,675

Item #17 is the oil cooler. Item #11 is the high pressure hose going from the pump to the steering cylinder. Item #6 is the return hose from the steering cylinder to the oil cooler. Item #8 is the low pressure return line from the oil cooler back to the pump.

You could always try to ask the last person who worked on it what happened and hope they would tell the whole story.

Thanks all.

I traced the hose that was attached to the inlet of the oil cooler. The other end of it was stuffed underneath the engine not connected to anything.
I took it off and attached the low pressure from the cylinder to it and now we're back in business... HOWEVER now I have a new problem which I will post in a new thread... I have no power to anything AGAIN....

Since it was probably disconnected for a reason, I would pressure check the cooler before reinstalling it. Unless you want water in your power steering, and trust me, you don't

Great advice... I will pressure check it as soon as I restore power to everything. Your quote says it all - very true.
