Hi all,
It has actually been a while since I had an issue... but, I just figured out that my power steering actuator is leaking, I don't want to take the time to "try" to replace it myself, how expensive SHOULD it be to have a boat shop remove and replace? Just wanted to have an idea before I started calling around, I am afraid to even guess least I be very disappointed! 2004 VOLVO Penta SX-M on a 5.0GXI, four winns 190, and no, there isn't much room back there at all, I am assuming the starboard exhaust and maybe some other hoses would have to come out just to get at it...pump started making noise, but is still quite at idle, so hopefully the pump is still good... hope, hope hope.

thanks

How much all depends on how good the access is in your boat & how stuck the big cotter pins are in the mount bolts. The small cotter pins are hard to get at (for the cable & steering arm) but usually come out. The larger ones are easier to access but can be hell to get out. I did this job on my Cobra (very similar to the Volvo) and needed a cotter pin extractor to get them out.

If the pump is making noise it’s sucking in air due to low fluid level because of the leak. Until you fix it try to keep the reservoir full or else you’ll wind up having to replace the pump too. On my boat I removed the rear seats & both sides of the exhaust system to gain access.

If you do toast the pump, good news is the PS pump rebuild kit is $14 and a new pump cartridge is $50
