Power Pack Problems

I have 1986 50HP Evinrude, I have problem with the power pack. It keeps on blowing I put in a new one and the motor runs great. The first time I take it out it dies on me while under way and will not restart. This has happened three times. The first time it happened I figured it was just its time I was on a full plane and the motor just cut out and that was it I was dead in the water. I bought another power pack and installed it, took the boat out and after about 40 minutes of run time the same thing happened under way and the motor just cuts out. I went investigating what the problem could be that keeps blowing these and a mechanic told me it could be the stator. I wanted this motor to be reliable so I changes all electronics. Stator, Timerbase because the harness didn't look good I replaced that too, Power pack, Rectifier, and both coil packs. Last night was the first time I took it out and again after about 40 minutes I got stuck the shutdown was a little different instead to just cutting out, it slowed down from 3500 RPM to 2000 to 1000 to off in a matter of about 30 Seconds.

I am at a loss and turning to this forum for some help I have been a member for some time but this is my first post. I appreciate any help I am lost at this point.

Thank you,

Matt

Re: Power Pack Problems

Remove engine cover and separate big red plug. On end that goes to remote control, find pin that coresponds to black and yellow wire, it should not have battery voltage to it with the key on. While doing this test wiggle key switch on and off and back to on.

OK, I will check that, On that note plug that comes from the stator has I believe 5 wires to it and one empty plug There is a plug form the the red Connector that plugs into the plug from the stator is that the wire you are talking about that should not have 12V?

Re: Power Pack Problems

Test on the end of the big red plug that goes to your remote control. The black /yellow wire grounds out the capacitor in the power pack thus shutting off the engine when ignition switch is turned to off. Sometimes these switches go bad and intermittently and send battery voltage to the M terminal while the ignition switch is in the on position. When this happens power pack is fried.

Re: Power Pack Problems

I tested the ignition switch and there was no change in voltage on the Yellow and Black wire. I tried shaking the harness under the ignition switch and was able to see a .5 V spike on the volt meter is that enough to fry the power pack, I stated looking at my Harness a little more and found one of the pins was loose and actually seperated on pin A could that have caused the power pack to fry? What is odd is that it is a different harness from previous failures. The previous harness was melted so it was replaced with a used one that apperently had a bad pin on the connector from the stator.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Comin outa left field here, but, at your own risk, disconnect the harness at the previously mentioned "red connector". Start the motor with a rope, take it out and see if you can duplicate the problem with the harness isolated. You will have to hand choke the motor to stop it (unless of course the power pack "refries") good luck!
