The forum seems to believe the more power the better. What's the difference between merc opti max as opposed to 4strokes in pontoons?

Re: PoWer options

2 strokes have less maintenence, no valves to adjust ect but the 4 strokes burn less gas, there have been several discussions on here about this and it seems to be a draw or personnal preference.

The four strokes are also quieter which is nice for cruising, go with ther dealer that is closer, if you have to drive an hour to service the engine you need to figure that inot your cost also.

We have had both and just ordered our new toon with a 4 stroke. I have actually had more maintenace issues with the 2 stroke than our 4 stroke.

I think the "maintenance issues" are really not issues but expenses. 4-strokes have oil and filters that need chaning, valves that need periodic checks and adjustments, timing belts/chains that attention/replacement and if any of these are ignored, THEN you have serious maintenance issues.

Re: PoWer options

I have owned three toon and my last one has a 4S and it has performed outstandingly for me. I don't want to slam 2S for respect for all that have them, but it is a personal preference.

Not know how much you know about 2S, some models you have to pre-mix 2S oil with the gas, with other models, you don't have to mix at all, you put gas in the tank, but you do have to make sure you have 2S oil in a separate tank and it is then mixed as it goes into the cylinder - 2S have really changed over time and they are lighter than 4S.

Now 4S - again, each one is different. Think of it as a car engine, put gas in the tank, check the oil with a dip stick - you turn the key and it starts up just like a car and you go...... no mixing oil, no separate oil in the tank (you still have oil in the crankcase - like a car). Some have timing belts, usually located on the top of the engine, others have a timing chain (auto adjust) just like a car and should last the lifetime of the engine. You have to do maintenance on both 2S & 4S, but in my experience - I had to do more with my 2S than I have had to do with my 4S.

I have had my 4S for 6yrs (knock on wood) and never had it in the shop - except for changing the water pump out. My fishing buddy has a 2S Yam 200HPDI on a bay boat, damn thing runs alike a bat out of hell - she is fast........ and as a precaution - has his in every year for maintenance for decarbonization and other stuff. I don't go as fast, but at 37-39mph - not bad....for a toon.
