Power is strange. Fuel Problem?

It seems that my 1980 115 outboard Johnson is sluggish of the start. Its strange though because it seems that it has to warm up(which takes time!) and then it has good power but not every time. It sometimes goes strong, but more sluggish:(. Is it a gas problem? If so, where do I start to check and what are other problems it could be? Also, I would be full throttle and it would take about 2 full minutes of full throttle and then I would feel the power suddenly kick in like it should have and will go strong. Fuel, Fuel line, primer, Fuel filter, something in engine? Please help!

start with the basics, do a compression, and spark check record the results, and post them back here. give us the numbers on each cylinder, and the spark should jumpt 1/2 to 7/16 of and inch. this gives us a basis to diagnois.

I have never done a spark plug check but the compression is 120, 120, 115, 125. Does that help any and what are the basics?

tas just told you the basics, compression and spark. Compression sounds great. Spark is tested by how far it will jump and should be a bright blue color. Spark tester can be make or bought. It is a rather simple device. Anyhow it seems like your problem is most likely fuel related to me. Could be something as simple as dirty carbs. Trying pulling float bowls and see what's in there.
