Re: Powder coat

The link was intresting.

We have been powder coating parts at work for many years, I also have a small system in my home workshop.

I have never done as much prep work as that, all I do is sand/shot blast clean in thinners blow dry and coat. I've never had a problem

RPJS, do you do cast aluminum? I wanted to get some Ford cast aluminum rocker covers done and several vendors just about refused to do them. They said the aluminum offgases, when the coating is heated, causing the finish to flake off.

Cast aluminium motorcycle wheels are powdercoated Boomy- maybe they have a problem because the rocker covers get hot?

Re: Powder coat

I never heard the term offgas before.
The only thing that would worry me about a rocker coverwould be any oil that may have got into a pourous casting. The oil would tend to boil out when in the oven, which would make a mess of the finish.

The way to get round it is to pre heat the castings in the oven for a few hours before cleaning.

Parts the size of a rocker cover are very doable at home, I have a very small gravity feed electric gun (about$150) and our old kitchen oven in my workshop which gives me some very good results...........TIP dont use a fan oven  ;)
