Re: pouring sinkers

My Dad, Uncle, and I pour our own lead wieghts. Dad leaves in IL. Uncle Lives in MO. I live in In. now. We get our lead the same way you do. I also get lead for the DNR Shooting Range, when the clean it out. My friend is with the DNR and when they clean and repair the range he calles me and I go help. I take buckets with me and any lead that is found we throw in the bnuckets and I take it home. Most the time I get 2 or 3 buckets full. But all the do is move the dirt back up on the back stop and rebuiled the target frames.

Re: pouring sinkers

There is a thread in saltwater fishing about making weights with a good amount of detail. Some tips too

Re: pouring sinkers

I forgot to meantion. One other place to get lead is from places that sell ammo reloading gear. The lead shot that is used to reload shotgun shells. And some times when they get bullets ship to them there are some that are deformed and they can't use them. The owner of the reloading store here in town would throw them away. I asked him to keep them for me so I could use them. It worked out best for both of us. He still got money for the bullets and I got the lead. I'd give him $5 or $10 depending on how full the bucket was. But that is no longer he closed the store and retiered.

Re: pouring sinkers

Since the goverment EPA has limited the use of lead over 10 years back, or there abouts, getting good lead is alot harder to find. It can still be had but the cost is rather steep anymore. I cast all my sinkers and splitshots along with shotgun slugs and maxie balls and round balls for my blackpowder guns. I was lucky enought several years back to get over 1800# of lead from one place and still have close to 800# of it left. I usally do all my casting during the winter because of the heat that comes off of my bunner and pot that holds over 40# of lead at one time. I can usually cast enought in two days to last me and two helpers for a couple years of fishing and shooting. One of the guys I know tries to hit several of the auto salavage yards around and get the lead weights from the cars and trucks. Last year he got over 175# from 3 yards and it only cost him 55 bucks for it plus his time. Just away to get lead if one is willing as has the time.
