Hi, all- I'm kinda sorta someday maybe going to upgrade to a larger boat. 27-28 ft range. In single engine configurations, they're generally equipped with a 7.4L putting out 300+ hp.
I'm not familiar at all with the GM big blocks. Are they good motors in general? Do they have common problem areas or mechanical weaknesses? Are maintenance items generally easy to reach and service? Obviously, they're going to use more fuel then my 5.7 GSi, but are they notorious gas hogs?
Just to let you know, for 90% of my boating, I'm a 'cruising speed, under 3500 rpm' kinda guy. Don't do water sports, and don't like to run at WOT except to blow out the cobwebs occasionally and make sure the motor's acting the way it should
Just trying to get a read on what to expect if I need to change over from a SBC (which I love) to one of the 'monsters'.
