ok, let me explain. I have a 1983 mariner 80hp. on a 16ft trihull. I recently bought a 20ft. sea ox and am putting the 80 on it(i already know it will be underpowered but I will have to make due for now). The remote box that I have on the tri-hull has everything on it. When you press in the key, it activates the choke. On the console of the sea ox, it has a key in the dash, and the throttle does have the neutral button but I cannot find a choke button. My question is this. To use the dash as is, is it possible to wire up a button or switch to activate the choke. I am pretty sure that I can get the key to work, but I am not sure about the choke. I found the yellow w/black stripe wire in the wire harness that goes to the choke solenoid, but do just not sure how to wire that to a momentary push switch. Just trying to keep as much the original look of the boat as I can. Dont want to bolt my remote on the side of the console if I can help it.

yep! wire from choke to push button, from push button to S terminal on key switch . Or to any
terminal that is hot when key is on. Using the S terminal you can only choke when starting. Use the I terminal and you can choke at any time.

If I do it that way, do I need to run another ground from the switch to the motor, or just the hot wire? That was really what I was unsure of. I think all I need to do is run the hot from the fuse box to the switch then to the key then to the motor, and run a ground from the fuse box to the switch and that is it. Am I right?

Your choke solenoid is grounded to engine already. connect black / yellow wire from solenoid to push button. Then from button to hot terminal. No other ground required .

Why not just use the switch from your remote and install it into your dash?

Re: possibly tricky install

I guess I COULD, but I would have to disassemble the remote and remove the ignition switch, since to choke it i just push in the key. This way, the only thing that I will have to do is run a single wire since there is already a switch on the dash. Just seems much easier and I would still have a complete remote should anyone need it. Pretty much anything that I do not need I give to my outboard mechanic for spare parts. I have given him steering cables with steering wheels, old outboards, and now a remote box. He does great work for me and usually gives me discounts cause I send a ton of business his way.

I would go your original direction with adding a wire. As you said the switch is available and why take the other remote apart, more items in pieces. If you want the push to start key switch get another

A lot of boats with Johnnyrude motors had ign key on dash. Few Merc did.

If you are going to use the existing throttle and shift cables, you will need to be sure they are compatible with Mercury. Mercury had a keyswitch in their MerControls in the early 70s or earlier. Maybe that existing control is from Johnnyrude?
