possible throttle issue?

Hi Guys, I have a 1971 StarCraft Cheiftan with a mercruiser 165 I/O. I think I have a problem, when I put the throttle forward or reverse it doesn't engage until about 45 degrees and WOT is around 160 degrees. When I watch the actual throttle linkage on the throttle lever I can feel the back of the lever turn but until around 45 it doesn't start moving the linkage. Do I need a new throttle, or is there a way to adjust this so it kicks in right away. It does accelerate when it does kick in, it just takes a long time for the lever to actually start moving the linkage.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I'll try it, but I don't have an alpha drive, i'm going up in the boat tonight so i'll see if what he's saying makes sense. and if it helps, from what i'm seeing the lever doesn't even try to engage the cable until like 45 degrees though.

Ayuh,.... The 1st part of the lever stroke, shifts the drive, the latter part of the stroke is the throttle,....

Yer's maybe worn, but the concept is quite Normal,...
