First of all, I just want to say the thread "My carbs didn't look dirty...is this normal?" has been an absolute wealth of info for me and probably alot of other people.
I learned around ten things about my engine and troubleshooting I didn't really know before....for example the really high compression ratio (mine is 160 per cylinder after rebuild) on the older 50, 55, and 60hp two cylinders. (mine is a 1981 60hp two cylinder)
Another thing of interest was Outboard Jims pointer about any oil under the flywheel indicating a possible crankshaft seal leak.
Well, I recently finished rebuilding my engine and it seems to be running fine, albeit on my stand with muffs, but I noticed a very small amount of oil on the starter side of the motor that looked like it had been lightly sprayed there. I didn't really think anything of it until I saw a small amount of pooled oil (about the size of a dime) leaking from the bottom of the engine cowling down onto the lower unit. That got my attention, but I couldn't see where it came from.
And then I remembered I reused the crankshaft seal when I reassembled the motor since it looked okay to my unexperienced eyes. It was slightly flattened in a couple spots but I thought it was okay.
If the crankshaft seal IS leaking, would I be seeing any other symptoms...I mean the engine seems to be running fine although I've yet to boat test it on the harbour.
Okay, hopefully this is just much ado about nothing, but you know how some of us newbies are...we get paranoid about everyhthing after we do some major work on our engines.
Thanks, dave. ![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
