Hello and thank you in advance for looking/replying. I have been given a 1985 Sea Ray 197 Monaco with a Mercruiser 260 Engine. The backstory is about 4 years ago it was not properly winterized and when my buddy and I went to fire it up it ran great for about 5 minutes and then a brown goo similar to a thick Yahoo or chocolate milk came spilling out under the carburetor cover (I believe). My buddy never did anything with the boat and put it in storage and moved away. This past winter he said he didn't want to put any money or work into it and gave it to me. I would like to get it running and on the water this summer and do most of the work myself. I have a friend that is an engine guy so he would help me throw a new one in it if necessary. My question is where do I start, I have looked up doing a compression test but could not find a complete guide on how to perform one. There are no visible cracks from the outside but I have been told a compression test would tell me if I have a cracked block. I included a picture of where the water/oil mixture was coming from but this is just a general picture, not my engine. Thanks for any advice on where to start!
