Positive fuel delivery to Holly carb on VP570. Almost always does not start without a prime. It then sounds good while running between idle and about 1500rpms.

At this point after checking for air leaks from tank forward. RR the fuel supply line, doped the fitting, and tested for bubbles, have none. Tested fuel pump at start (lots of fuel) to carb. Carb works great when I prime it, but usually will not restart w/o additional primes, but occasionally it does.

So electric choke? other component on a carb like mine that would not allow full in at start up. Ideas please. Thanks!!

What do you mean by priming, moving the throttle? or pouring fuel in somewhere?

At a cold start moving the throttle past half throttle and back a couple of times briskly should squirt enough fuel into the intake from the accelerator pump to start right up if the carb has fuel in it. The choke should be closed when it is cold so it should stay running, might be a little rough at first.

After that on the same day it should start right up with no throttle movement if all is well with the carb.

During warm weather mine (1991 VP 570) will start right up even 2 weeks later with no throttle pumping.

When yours will not start on the same day it could be flooded with fuel. When it does that then, in throttle-only mode, try moving the throttle to full then crank the engine, be ready to throttle back when it catches. If that works and it starts after just a few seconds then the carb is probably flooding the intak and needs a rebuild. Take a look at your spark plugs, they will tell you if it is too ruch. Also strong fuel smell from the carb throat, and lots of vapors indicate the carb is flooding fuel into the intake. If it is flooding severely then the oil will smell strongly of fuel also.

You do use the throttle only button on the control and give it some throttle after pumping the throttle a time or two to prim it don't you?

Don S, I have not been doing that. I thought the electric choke handled it. I just tried it and it (throttling before start) worked well. It appears that my controler does not have a throttle only on it or I don't understand it. It's a hilex and has up down and neutral switch on grip. If I'm ignorant about the control please correct me, or would you recomend a replacement? Thank you both for your replies.

On my 1991 model the whole lever pulls out and that is the throttle only. No button to push, I just slide my hand in between it and the mount and move it out.

The "electric choke" description on this type of engine does not mean that the choke is closed by an electric operation. Instead it means the choke is heated electrically instead of by engine heat from the intake manifold, and that heat is what gradually moves the choke plate to open from closed. The choke closes mechanically once it cools down again, but has to be really "cold" before it closes. Proper starting when cold is to pump the throttle 2 times then crank the engine.

I trying to learn how to reply on here, so forgive me if I'm going about it wrong. Maclin, sound like we may have the same engines and year. What kind of controller do you use. As I stated to Don S, mine appears to not have a throttle only. I would like that option so that I can warm it up. First I/O for me, appreciate your feed back.

OK, got it! Thanks!! I'll look closely at my controller and see if I can do the same re-throttle only. Thanks again for your and assistance.

I believe if you pull out on the throttle handle near the bottom you will get throttle only.

Thanks boatguya1, it's a learning experience for me. It's starting and running perfectly. Now to get her out on the water. Thank you all so much for your advice and patience.
