I have a honda bf15 that im thinkig of putting a hydrofoil onto.
In the manual it says that tyhe engine must never be laid on its back....so my question is what damage would it do if it was and how else would i transport it as i always take it off the boat when trailering (i cant lay it on its side with a hydrofoil on)

Re: positioning 4 stroke while transporting

Not sure which is the bf15, if it's a 4 stroke, there is (only) a certain you can lay the outboard.

4 stroke has oil in the engine to luberacate the internal parts, if it's laid incorrectly, the oil gets in where it should and 'bang'.

There should be somesort of 'stud' on one side of the outboard, they are like little feets, where you can put it down without damaging the cowling of the outboard. If the hydrofoil is in the way, just prop it up with a small box or something, how about fashioning a small tripod?

You're right. When standing in back of the motor, the feet are on the right side of the motor.

Your owners manual should detail this, I believe on my Yamaha 9.9 there was a sticker right on the engine showing 'Do's and Don'ts' for transporting, that was a portable (tiller) model as well.

OEMs have to be careful, models sold as portable engines have to be portable or they run afoul of the 'implied warranty of merchantability'. What good is a 'portable' outboard if you cannot transport it? If you can destroy the motor by laying it on its side then there darn well better be a Big Ol' warning label saying so.

Check the owners manual.

In general you must not lay it with the cylinders or the carb down. Oil will fill the cylinders or pour out the breather respectively.

jmoser, 777 becomes the manufacturer of his outboard if he installs the hydrofoil.
then he has to decide the best way to transport.

DHP

If you intend to transport this engine on its side you will either have to remove the hydrofoil on that side of the gearcase or make a special box so that the engine rides as it should. Why the hydro in the first place?Have you adjusted the tilt pin? What are you trying to correct with this bolt on piece of cra..., sorry, plastic?
