Position of coils

Could someone tell me how far back the coils need to slide outward towards the flywheel? On my 1961 Johnson RDS23.
Does the back of the coil set flush with the bottom of the place it sits or does it need to be flush with the recessed top part of where it sits? Thanks for replies.

You need to purchase the coil alignment ring

why revive old stuff has asked by Racerone...
