Back in December, I inquired about hiring a fishing guide in the Oconomowoc and Okauchee [?]area for day or two of musky and pike fishing. After a guide picked by Bass Pro from a card on the wall, 2 years before, I expected to do better. This guy dumped his trash in the water, fished the water ahead of me and hotdogged the boat showing off, nearly throwing both of us out . This year, I hired a guide out of "Smokey's Muskie Shop ". He stated it was $175 for one and $225 for 2 , his boat limit. I stated I'd take the whole boat at 225 for myself. I also stated I didn't smoke as I have burned lungs from years of fire fighting. He said he could hold off smoking if it bothered me. Great observation. Since we were going on vacation for 3 weeks I would be out of contact and needed to know the meeting place on the 15 of July and would contact him a 2 weeks before we left. Five phone calls to his cell and one to Smokeys, who assured me he would call, I had no contact from him. I was there on the assigned day with no guide and no meeting point. Now if this is the way guides operate in Wisc. I will take my time and money and go elsewhere. I fish all over the west , from Alaska to southern Cal, every year, and these guides, the ones I've had, know how to take care of their clients. These 2 are not indicative of your normal guides , but they sure give guiding a bad name. The guides name was Brian Susler off of Smokey's guide list. The excuses may be heard, but I went 2000 miles to be stood up. These guys are true jerks. Jim Tuohy

Re: Poor quality fishing guides

Sorry you had bad luck, Jim.

A couple of suggestions about guide selection.

1. Get personal references and talk to them. We all have our personal priorities and one guys companion is another guys pariah.

I have used the Edman brothers, Scott and Alan, out of Angle Outpost on Angle Inlet, Lake Of the Woods, for about 10 years now and have always been very satisfied.

Because they are in the bow, operating the positioning motor, they do fish in front of me, my son and my grandson, but we catch what we go for. They don't smoke and they make the best shore lunches I have ever had.

2. If you are after Musky, Northern Pike, Walleye or Smallmouth I don't think you can do better than LOTW, or the Edmans. We never fail to limit on walleye, or to boat several 30"+ musky and at least one 40"+ musky in a week of fishing.

Re: Poor quality fishing guides

:) Being a guide myself and also expereincing good and bad,it's only a few bad ones that spoil it for others!!!

The other guide at the dock had a party of six and only three rods!! I say to charlie, where are your other rods?? He says I only have three and they will have to share!!! I just shook my head!!!

I've had two bad experiences in the last 20 years hiring a guide, once in the Bahamas and once in Florida!!

When I hire a guide I also exspect to catch fish but sometimes it just don't happen!!! In the bahamas I now hire the same guide every year and some days we catch and other days we don't!!! ;)
