Yesterday I put my boat in the water for the first time after the long winter restoration. When we were loading up and wiping her down a guy pulled his 2009 24' Yammy dual jet out at the same time. I asked him how he liked the boat and he looked like he was going to cry. He said in a thick Scottish accent "You can't steer the bugger!" I said "really"? He then proceeded to show the HUGE gaping hole in the hull where he had JUST hit the dock. I mean this was one of the worst whiskey dings I have ever seen. I was about 2 feet long and 6 inches wide and ALL THE WAY THROUGH! He said that he is going to sell it now because it is impossible to steer. I can see the CL listing now.

"Gorgeous Yamaha 24' Dual Jet Low hours. Minor work needed. Easy Fix"

Shame! Anyone else have one of these boats? I really like them.

They need throttle to steer, and I am guessing that may have had something to do with it . . .

X2. Exactly what I was thinking. I had a friend run smack into me on a wave runner one day because he got off the throttle and panicked - same concept here it seems.

sounds like proof positive for the saying

'never approach the dock any faster than your willing to hit it'.

That's too bad. I've read a lot about these boats and that does always seem to be an issue for people not used to how jet propulsion works. My father-in-law ran into a boat on a lift doing the same thing with a jet ski. You really have to learn how to come in slow and work the throttles with these boats. Not really that hard but definitely different than a traditional outboard/IO that has a "rudder" in the water to help steer.
Of course this poor guy would've known all that if he would've visited the website yamahajetboaters.com and read up on the cobra jet fins which bolt onto the nozzles and act as rudders for these boats and jet ski's.
I'd hate to see someone give up on one of these beautiful boats just because they didn't take the time to learn how to drive one.

OUCH !!!! Yep, I've been there, just not that bad. I dry docked a 750 jet ski into the bank of Flint river. Luckily, the jet ski only sufford a few scratches. It was totally my fault but a lesson well learned. NOW, I know how to handle one with respect.

That is pretty cool. My wife LOVES those boats and I see on in the future.

Re: Poor guy at the lake yesterday.

its really sad to have someone blame the boat, when the reality it is EXTREMELY maneuverable, much more so than any prop boat.

guys like that probably are dangerous in a rowboat.

Those boats are ALL OVER the place down at Ocean City, MD. They seem pretty nice to me and their numbers seem to agree :)

I boat in some pretty shallow water and think one would be great. You could literally power 20 miles + into the Grand Canyon with one of those even with Lake Mead down 100 ft. I'll never understand why some say they aren't a "real" boat. They are everything any other 22 - 25 ft. Bowrider is just without hangy down parts
