Poor acceleration, no WOT

I have a 1990 Sea Ray 250DA with the 7.4 Bravo. Engine was running perfectly. I took it out with some friends and anchored at a beach. On the trip home it felt like I was trying to get on plain while towing another boat. It accelerated poorly and wouldn't go above 3900 RPM. I've given it a complete tune up about 10 hours ago. It was running perfectly. Starts fine but feels like I'm towing an invisible boat all of a sudden. No damage to the prop(stainless mirage). I took it out today and same problem. Boat has fresh gas. Any help would be appreciated. Also it feels as though it's working much harder to sustain a slower speed. Thanks.

I have the type with the screw in the bottom. Do I just drain it into something and look at it? How will I know if there is water in it? Thanks

Do you keep it in the water? If so, check for vegetation growth on the bottom. If there is growth and enough of it, it can slow you down to a crawl.

No, I trailer it. No growth on the bottom. I'm going to check the fuel filter today.

If there is water in my fuel filter do I need to replace it or do I just empty it and put a new one on?

I didn't do it yet. I have the racor type with the metal bowl on the bottom. Do I undo the bolt or unscrew the entire filter and dump it out? What am I looking for, how will I know if there is water in the fuel?

Re: Poor acceleration, no WOT

I emptied out my filter and it appears to be only fuel. Does anybody have an idea where to look next? This wasn't a gradual loss of performance, this occurred during one day. Ran excellant going to the beach and like garbage coming back in the afternoon. Thanks

Re: Poor acceleration, no WOT

The only thing at all that happenedof any interest was while drifting backward at a snails pace with the engine off to set the anchor, the outdrive drifted into sand. I very easily pushed the boat off. No bang, no damage to prop. The prop is in good shape. Besides that the trip was perfect. I see no physical damage to the outdrive. I boat in areas with soft sand bottom.

have you checked to see if there is any restriction on the fuel tank sounds like it is starving for fuel

How can I do that? It's an internal 100 gallon tank.

Help, changed my fuel/water filter and went back out today. Same problem. Anybody have an idea of what to check next. It feels like I lost 75 HP and 700RPM's.

Re: Poor acceleration, no WOT

Would I still get the so-so performance if my hub was spun? How can I check that. "Bond-o," The exhaust sounds pretty much the same to me, how on earth would I check that? Carburated by the way. Thanks for the suggestions guys, how can I check those things?
