Hi, I am replacing the boards on my transom. Got the boards cut and glued, now what I want to know is, if I should fiberglass the boards? Would this make much difference? Thank you in advance for your reply?

mmm I am not sure about using boards, mine is made out of two pieces 3/4 of marine plywood about a total of 1 1/2 thick. and no extra treatment is needed. But what ever you do don't use pressure treated materials, it eats aluminum. Glass and cloth would sure help it last longer if its pine or some other wood.

You don't have to glass them but you want to make sure that the entire board is coated be it with glass or a sealer like Thompsons.

And remember to mount the board and drill all your holes, then seal, alot of people forget about the holes and that is where the rot starts.

And yes, ply wood is probably the best.

Use marine plywood, not the off the shelf plywood at Home Depot or Lowes. This is not somewhere to get cheap, as you don't want your motor to "deep six."

You can check West Marine online to see if they have some kind of epoxy sealer that'll work on wood. They have some good narratives. I would want something better than spar varnish.

You would want to do a first sealing prior to gluing the two layers together with a water proof glue. Then apply more sealer after the holes are drilled prior to the motor being mounted.
