Pontoon Prop

Just purchased a new to me pontoon, a 1997 18 footer with a 1997 60 HP Johnson J60TLEUA. It currently has a 17P prop and is turning 4400 RPM WOT, three blade omc propeller. I want to make sure this motor is running in the proper RPM range and need to go down in pitch. I was thinking an 11P Solas Amita 3 blade prop as this should get me to the proper 5500 WOT range. What do you think???

Re: Pontoon Prop

11" seems reasonable but I would be inclined to go to a 4 blade as these resist ventilation(cavitation) and should reduce slip numbers which tend to be high with a pontoon.
If the 11 ends up a little light you can still use it and just watch the rpm.
If you go to a higher number and end up over propped you shouldn't use it for an extended period.

What 4 blade would work good, as looking here on iboats the lowest pitch 4 blade would be the Amita at a 13 pitch.

Re: Pontoon Prop

I'd try the 11 pitch 3 blade prop. The engine may not have the juice to push a 4 blade prop.

The Merc and Yamaha 60 hp Big Foots are pushing larger diameter props. I think I'd still stick with a 3 blade unless I was overpowering the boat--largest motor available.
