I need to replace the rotten double layered 3/4" treated plywood transom on my pontoon boat. I am using a Johnson 70 hp engine. I will be using the toon primarily in all fresh water. Any suggestions as to what to replace it with or what to use to seal it with to last a long time? Anyone know where to get an all aluminum replacement transome? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: POntoon Boat transom

VaGent,
I bought a piece of half inch thick 4' X 8', 1/2 inch thick pressure treated plywood for about $23.00 used my friends table saw and used the old rotten piece of transom as a pattern to draw 4 pieces/cut them out and bought a couple tubes of good construction glue to glue them together used big c-clamps to hold them together with screws also and let them dry for about 2 days then I got some Olympia water treatment for wood and liberally put about 10 coats all over the finished transom piece, let it dry and then installed it on my pontoon boat. The finished product was a little over 2 inches thick but it is solid as a piece of metal and I have been out numerous times with my pontoon boat and no issues what so ever. I also have a 70 horse power Johnson, model J70ELCTE outboard. Hope this helps you out. Bob:)

Re: POntoon Boat transom

Thanks for the information Bubba. I wasn't sure what I should use as I know the transom I have now had been replaced. I had already cut some 3/4" treated plywood to replace mine but then I read that it wasn't the wise stuff to use. I like your idea about covering it with a good water sealer. I appreciate the information. I'll go & get some sealer today & finish using what I already have. I WANT to get this toon in the water instead of working on it so much.

Make sure you install the new board and drill all your holes then pull it back out and seal all the holes you just drilled.
